The Colour of Magic

Just thought you'd like to know that The Colour of Magic has been turned into a film too, starring David Jason (he played Albert in Hogfather) as Rincewind, a certain cuddly hobbit as Twoflower and the delightful Tim Curry as a villainous magician. But the highlight of the film is the delectable Jeremy Irons as the Patrician, little dog, widows peak and all.....

Also, Sky One has handed over money to have Going Postal filmed, to be released next year!

Recently in one of my re-reads I found an indication that the century after the Century of the Fruitbat is the Century of the Rat. And now of course I can't remember where I saw it but I belive it was mentioned by the Patrician. Or maybe a wizard. But yesterday in my first re-read of Going Postal it is mentioned that this is the Century of the Anchovy....
So what century is this?

I have been an avid reader of the disc world books for many years and see this a fitting tribute .

The next Discworld scheduled is another Tiffany Aching - from Amazon.co.uk:

'Tiffany Aching is a trainee witch - now working for the seriously scary Miss Treason. But when Tiffany witnesses the Dark Dance - the crossover from summer to winter - she does what none has ever done before and leaps into the dance, into the oldest story there ever is, and draws the attention of the wintersmith himself...As Tiffany-shaped snowflakes hammer down on the land, can Tiffany deal with the consequences of her actions? Even with the help of Granny Weatherwax and the Nac Mac Feegle - the fightin', thievin' pictsies who are prepared to lay down their lives for their 'big wee hag' ... '

while I enjoy the Nac Mac Feegle and always happy to encounter Granny again, I'm still trying to decide what to make of these Discworld novels intended for a younger audience.

I don't know when they made this into a movie, but it's in my netflix cue. I'll be sure to let you all know how it rates.

Does anyone know if there are plans to make more of these books into film? It seems like endless material for animators and filmmakers alike. Andf I also imagine that since there are simply so many storylines, for the sake of movies, you could mix and match whichever ones you wanted, without incurring the wrath of dedicated fans. Most stuff in these stories seems not to follow an entirely specific timeline.

Hello!

I'm currently reading through Maskerade, and I've gotten to the bottom of page 201 only to find that a chunk of the middle of the page at the bottom is missing. It looks as though it possibly happened during printing, and I've had the book long enough that I probably can't manage to return it.

Would someone be so kind as to type out the full of a few sentences for me, so that I can jot them down in the sidelines on either side of the page? I've put up the area around the torn bit, with ----- in place of what's missing out of my copy. Thanks very much!

well, there is already sorta a "favorites" thread, so i figured i would ask which discworld book is everyone's least favorite.(not that they arent all awesome, of course)

personally, i did not find equal rites up to par with the other discworld books ive read. somehow it just didnt resonate with me, and i did not laugh nearly as much as i usually do with a dw book.

Build a discworld composite story...

Its an easy game... we're building a story from bits of the discworld. Basic rules:

1) Use only complete sentances from discworld books.
2) You can add up to 3 sentances per post.
3) There is no rule 3.

Here's my start:

Granny had nothing against fortune-telling provided it was done badly by people with no talent for it. It was a different matter if people who ought to know better did it, though. She considered that the future was a frail enough thing at best, and if people looked at it hard enough they changed it.

Here's an official site - The Links page is particularly usefull and will lead you to personal appearances (I can't believe I missed him in Cambridge this month.. That's what I get for living a life and not indulging persistant curiousity), Mucho Merchandise including the BBC tapes and DVD's of adaptations (beware of VHS tapes - they're in PAL and won't play in American VCR's)...

Oh, and a big "HoooooooRRRRrrrraaaaaaayyyy ! ! !" for this weekend... October 1st has not one but TWO books coming out... THUD! and WHERE'S MY COW !

I spent a few happy hours travelling the links last night, but there is just *ONE* thing I didn't find and could use some help on...

Does anyone know if there have been any fanfilms done on Discworld ???

There's some great stuff being produced on Star Wars, numerous comic book heroes, the Matrix and pretty much anything else that attracts devout fanatics... But I've got to think there's another out there besides me with a video camera who must have taken a crack at a short... If anybody knows anything, post it here.

The Hedgehog Song

The Hedgehog Song
(Heather Wood)

You can bugger the bear, if you do it with care,
In the winter, when he is asleep in his lair,
Though I would not advise it in spring or in fall--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

If you're feeling quite coarse, you can bugger the horse,
Or the palfrey, the jennet, the stallion (with force),
You can bugger the donkey, the mare, or the mule,
Though to bugger the pony is needlessly cruel.

You can bugger the ox (if you stand on a box)
And vulpologists say you can bugger the fox,
You can bugger the shrew, though it's awfully small--
But the hedgehog cvan never be buggered at all.

Herptologists gasp you can bugger the asp,
Entymologists claim you can bugger the wasp.
If an insects your thing, man, then just have a ball--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

And the elephant too, that you meet in the zoo,
Can be buggered if you are sure just what to do,
You will need a large mattress upon which to fall--
But the hedgehog cvan never be buggered at all.

You can bugger the bees if your down on your knees,
You can bugger the termites with terminal ease
You can bugger the beetle, the ladybug (bird!) too,
There's no end to the buggering that you can do.

You can bugger the cat if it isn't too fat
You can bugger the rabbit you draw from your hat
You can bugger the shark that you've chased in your yawl--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

You can bugger the ermine, and all other vermine,
Like rats, mice, and roaches, if you're not discernin'.
You can bugger the dog, it will come when you call--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

Although Mr. Tiggy is not very big, he
Avoids with great ease those who fancy his arse.
He just curls in a ball, shows his prickles and all--
And the would-be seducer leaves him in the grass

If you're that kind of fool, and you have a long tool,
Do it with a giraffe, if you stand on a stool,
Catch a yeti, who lives in the snows of Nepal--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

For the hedgehog escapes the posterior rapes
Performed upon others of different shapes
Those who run, swim, or slither, they get it withal--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

It is said, if you try, you can bugger the fly,
Or the swallow as it skims so skillfully by,
Use a noose or a net, or lime (if you've the gall)--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all

You can bugger the cow (I will not tell you how),
Or the boar, or the piglet, the shoat or the sow,
You can bugger the ass as it stands in the stall--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

You can order or shoo 'im, or run a knife through 'im
The one thing you cannot do is stick it to 'im.
If you try to seduce 'im, you'll end in a fix,
His prickles defend him against rampant pricks.

You can bugger the ram, you can bugger the lamb,
You can bugger the ewe, though the wether's a sham,
You can bugger the tiger (it may caterwaul)
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

You can bugger the seal, you can bugger the eel,
You can bugger the crab, though they say it can't feel,
You can bugger the bat as the night casts its pall,
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

You can bugger the snake (hold it down with a rake),
Though to bugger the quetzal may be a mistake.
You can bugger the billy, the nanny, the kid,
But to bugger the hedeghog just cannot be did.

You can bugger the slug, though it messes the rug,
You can bugger the different species of bug,
Or do it with a snail, if you slow to a crawl,
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

At the end of the day, when you've had your rough way
With all of those creatures, you'll just have to say
"That damned Erinaceous has been my downfall--"
For the hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

I've read all of the Discworld books over the last few years and as a consequence can't remember which stories depend on previous books. A friend of mine asked for a recommendation about which book to start with and apart from the obvious response of "with the first book", does anyone have an opinion of which is a good stand alone first read.

I myself started with "The Hogfather". I was going to recommend "Moving Pictures".

sure it was worth reading, but IMO there was not enough a) wackiness, and b) suspense

a) the only strong, Pratchettesquely exaggerated character was Sergeant Jackrum; and it didn't go into enough depth there. the plot, too, was pretty straightforward/simplistic compared to previous Pratchetts

b) the stakes weren't high enough. i never felt that anything important was in much danger. and the solution to the general problem of general warfare was almost literally a Deus ex Machina--which wasn't even very dramatically rendered

So I have just been asked from where Ankh-Morpork might have been 'mirrored'. I have no idea. The closest thing off the top of my head is Budapest because of the twin cities and the river. Can't think of any other narrative parallels with that city though.

Anybody have any ideas about this and any other similarities, people, places, events between the books and our (alternative) reality?

Ok, i'm sure that i've seen a cartoon series. I think it was based around the witches of Lancre. I've searched around a bit and can't find it. Maybe it was a dream? Maybe i took too much acid when i was young(er)? Maybe it was a premonition?

So i re-read Wyrd Sisters last night and suddenly it struck me-
Tomjon was born when the Fool was fully grown, and already working as the Fool for Dead King Verence.Yet the Fool's father is Tomjon's father. But clearly there is at least a 17 year age difference between the Fool and Tomjon which means the Fool's father had been visiting the ladies of Lancre for a long, long time!
Just an observation i never made the first six or seven times i read the book!

In the first book, we see Carrot as a bit of a simpleton, but the character has evolved over time. He gets darker in each novel it seems. It is now at the point where I think he and the Patrician have a bit of an "agreement" in place whereby they both run the city for the greater good. Carrot is probably Vetinari's main "ears on the street".

I think it all started at the end of "Men at Arms" and I see more and more signs of Carrot/Vetinari being a team of sorts. Anyone else suspect as such?

Many familiar faces in the first 100 pages, and a familiar (to this world) military scenario (including quite a new twist on "don't ask, don't tell") in which Ankh-Morpork has to invade the backward, religion-dominated strategically-located country for freedom and/or money.

Monstrous Regiment is a staff pick at the downtown Berkeley B&N. On the 43 bus on the way there, a guy was slowly starting to read either Soul Music or Maskerade from the Berkeley Public Library, and quite audibly chuckling. Where else have you seen DiscWorld books unexpectedly?
