Just thought you'd like to know that The Colour of Magic has been turned into a film too, starring David Jason (he played Albert in Hogfather) as Rincewind, a certain cuddly hobbit as Twoflower and the delightful Tim Curry as a villainous magician. But the highlight of the film is the delectable Jeremy Irons as the Patrician, little dog, widows peak and all.....
Also, Sky One has handed over money to have Going Postal filmed, to be released next year!

Re: The Colour of Magic
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 8:07 AMYES!!! When I do my little mind-game of casting all the characters of Discworld, I *ALWAYS* come up with Jeremy Irons as the Patrician! That, and Dame Judy Dench as Nanny Ogg and Vanessa Redgrave as Granny W. Gylnwth Paltrow (sp?) as Magret most of the time, when she's not pissing me off with her Valley Girl attitude.
Hope they start on the Guards! seris before too long. -

Mon, June 2, 2008 - 12:06 PMI would have wanted Alan Rickman but I agree that JI would be an Excellent Patrician. -

Re: The Colour of Magic
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 7:39 AMTim Curry and Jeremy Irons are good choices, though I agree Alan Rickman would also have been a good choice for the Patrician (though I was expecting much more from his performance as Marvin the Paranoid Android). As much as I love David Jason, he seems an odd choice for Rincewind. Rincewind is described as being young and scrawny, neither of which attributes David Jason possesses. I imagine Rincewind to be more like a young Rowan Atkinson or Chris Barrie. Still, I look forward to seeing how they've done with the film adaptation. I'm sure it'll be enjoyable regardless of things I disagree on. A film adaptation's never going to be perfect, especially since a lot of a book is down to imagination and we all imagine things differently. -

Re: The Colour of Magic
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 7:54 AMIt was hard for me to accept the same actor playing Rincewind as Albert but after seeing the film twice have to admit he did a good job. And the Patrician was precious, if I can take that liberty. I couldn't take my eyes off the hand holding little Wuffles during his entire scene.
Tim Curry was wonderful. Sean Astin was a little American for my taste but carries the Twoflower personality beautifully. -

Re: The Colour of Magic
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 3:26 AMWell, I look forward to seeing it. At least if any character was going to get made a bit too American, it's good that it was Twoflower, with him being a rich foreign tourist. -

Fri, March 27, 2009 - 7:34 AMExcept for the fact that the Counterweight Continent is supposed to be China. -

Re: The Colour of Magic
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 6:14 AMI know it's not true to the book, or at least not to how I imagined him - I was just saying I'd rather them Americanise that character than any of the others. I suppose although the Counterweight Continent is based on China, it's still a fictional place so the inhabitants can look and sound however the director wants, really. I really need to watch this film now. -

Re: The Colour of Magic
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 7:02 AMSince everything else was fairly faithful I am happy to forgive that little point, and he really was a perfect Twoflower, just didn't look the way I had visualised him.
The guy who playes Hiro in Heroes would have been perfect but he wasn't Somebody at the time. -

Sat, May 16, 2009 - 2:29 PMRhys Ifans (Spike in Notting Hill) would be a good Rincewind, I think.
