Wyrd Sisters!!

I don't know when they made this into a movie, but it's in my netflix cue. I'll be sure to let you all know how it rates.

Does anyone know if there are plans to make more of these books into film? It seems like endless material for animators and filmmakers alike. Andf I also imagine that since there are simply so many storylines, for the sake of movies, you could mix and match whichever ones you wanted, without incurring the wrath of dedicated fans. Most stuff in these stories seems not to follow an entirely specific timeline.

Excuse me , but Witches Most Certainly follow a Specific Timeline. As do Guards. As does Rincewind. As do Death and Susan.

There's a movie version?! I have got to sign up for Netflix one of these days.

The books would make really funny films, but I do worry about the puns not translating from page to screen.

There are animated versions of both Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music.

Wyrd Sisters follows the book reasonably closely. I'd imagine Soul Music is the same, but I haven't seen it, so I can't say for certain.

I just wish Terry Gilliam would do a Pratchett book. For some reason the only way the discworld series has made it to film is through some pretty cheesy animation and bad voice acting. The quality of his writing and infamous wit really should be put in a high budget feature film.

Pratchett and Gilliam seem made for each other.

Okay, mebbe I'd be satisfied with an animated version of a discworld book as long as Pixar or/and Dreamworks made it.

I've thought about this 'movie' for some time and I think I have the casting for the witches, at least: Emma Thompson as Granny Weatherwax, Judi Dench as Nanny Ogg and Gwyeth Paltrow as Magret Gaylic. Colin Farrel as TomJohn/Fool would be a nice touch, or maybe Joseph Finnes. The rest can be made up from the vast supply of British character actors.

Emma Thompson is not Old Enough to play Granny. Maybe Maggie Smith?

I thought about that, but I'm afraid that Maggie is too old. And if you saw Emma in 'Nanny McPhee", you'll see that she can transform into almost any age. And as she says, all too easily.

I have had this debate with many of my friends (those who don't scream and run away) and I assert that if you re-read the first description of her in 'WS', she is discribed as not being handsome, but whe had a sharp equine type of face, and her age was in-determinate.

And again, in defense of Emma, it's not the age which defines Granny W., it's her determination and force of personal will. I think that Emma would be suitably up to GW's strict standards.

it is pretty well established that Granny is Over 65. Since her relationship with Ridcully was "50 years or more ago" and she Had to have been at least 15, doncha think? So why is Maggie Smith too old?

So, on to the guards. Is Woody Harrelson too old now to play Carrot?

Woody's getting too old to play *Vimes*.

Woody is way too old to play Carrot! (And I'll grudging admit that Maggie was my first thought for Granny, but when I saw her in Harry Potter this years, she seemed..tired)

Now, for Colon, Ian McNiece would be perfect. I've always thought that John Cleese would be an interesting Patrician, or maybe Rupert Everett. Heath Ledger as Carrot maybe?

Soul Music. that is the other animated Discworld film.
i finally talked with my friend, he's got em both. i haven't seen either.

I actually have both Wyrds Sisters and Soul Music animated movies. They are both British productions put out by Cosgrove Hall Films LTD, Ventureworld Films LTD and ITEL. Soul Music is set up like a book in chapters and you have to click on each chapter from the menu to move on. Wyrd Sisters is more like a regular feature, it just plays straight thru.

We got our copies via Amazon.com

Incidentally the voice of Death in the animated movies....if I remember correctly is Christopher Lee and he does an amazing job of it!

Soul Music doesn't follow quite as closely (and I really don't like what they did with Nobby)...I own Wyrd Sisters, and have seen it a few times, but to be honest, even though the dialogue is almost identical, I think it misses something essentially...Pratchettish.
It almost makes it, but not quite.

Soul Music misses the mark by even more, I think.

Still, for any Pratchett fan, they're a must, just 'cos.

Okay that was a pretty nifty animated flick. Not stellar in any way, so much as non-objectionable, containing sophisticated humor & stuff.

I think our part-time 10yr old daughter will find it fairly endlessly amusing & intrigueing/confusing/thought-provoking. It gets my parental stamp of approval.
