"...An' then... then I'm gonna get *medieval* on his arse."
"How, exactly?"
"I thought maybe a maypole," said Mr. Tulip reflectively, "An' then a display of country dancing, land tillage under the three-field system, several plagues, and if my --ing hand ain't too tired, the invention of the --ing horse collar." -- Terry Pratchett, The Truth

"Been there, done that, bought the doublet."

-- ibid

"You can't give a sword to a child as a present!"
"IT IS AN EDUCATIONAL TOY"
"Someone could get killed!"
"A VALUABLE LESSON WILL HAVE BEEN LEARNED"

Probably paraphrasing, but that's my favorite that I can think of off the top of my head.

"Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it." (Pterry, 1991)

"Hate is a force of attraction. Hate is just love with it's back turned." (Pterry, 1997)

These are the first two I've found of a bunch of little scribbles I've made while re-reading the series. There are countless others somewhere, but these two are so wonderfully deep.

"The cheiftan had been turned into a pumpkin, although in accordance with the universal laws of comedy, he was still wearing his hat". Lords and Ladies IIRC.

"Pulling together is the way of despotism and tyranny. When everyone is pulling in all different directions is when real progress is made" - The Truth, again probably paraphrasing a bit.

"Dock-a-loodle-fod!" (Reaper Man)

"Well, basically there are two sorts of opera ... There's your heavy opera, where basically people sing foreign and it goes like 'Oh oh oh, I am dyin', oh, I am dyin', oh, oh, oh, that's what I'm doin', and there's your light opera, where they sing in foreign and it basically goes 'Beer! Beer! Beer! Beer! I like to drink lots of beer!', although sometimes they drink champagne instead. That's basically all of opera, reely.' (Nanny Ogg, in Maskerade)

"Nil Mortifi, sine lucre."
-Pyramids

A long and detailed footnote in The Last Hero explaining the size of the city of heaven, as cited in the Book of Revelations, which indicated pets may be allowed.

"Ook!"

Paraphrasing a part in The Truth

Some people say the glass is half empty, some people say it is half full. Some people say "What? This isn't my glass...my glass was bigger! And it was full! Who'se been pinching my beer!?!" and some people are in the corner with an empty, dirty glass that's been broken by one of the people demanding a bigger glass.

Oi Vey.

Hi all, still relatively new to this tribe despite discussing Art a la Colon with the Diva, so: greetings! I discovered the Discworld thanks to my first love and have been hooked ever since. I aim to stride through life like a Susan, but I'm afraid I'm probably more of a Margat. Favourite Discworld novel is Jingo, least favourite is Moving Pictures.

As to my favourite quote, there's so many, and you've mentioned a few already. I've recently finished Nanny Ogg's Cookbook however(why won't they publish the Joy of Snacks? Why?), and I think this quote just defines Nanny's pragmatic attitude to life, love, and everything:

"They say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, which just goes to show they're as confused about anatomy as they gen'rally are about everything else, unless they're talking about instructions on how to stab him, in which case a better way is up and under the ribcage."

I'm new to the group, and thought I'd poke my head in with a favourite quote. :3

"They may have been ugly. They may have been evil. But when it came to poetry-in-motion, the Things had all the grace and coordination of a desk-chair." -- Equal Rites

I had read the quote quite some time ago in an email sig, and giggled over the oddity of it; but when I encountered it in context I laughed myself silly.

"A carpet undulated past." -- Reaper Man

I just came across that one, and couldn't resist. :3

"When it comes to glittering objects, wizards have all the taste and self-control of a deranged magpie." --Sourcery

"I don't actually think," Ponder said, gloomily, "that I want to tell the Archchancellor that this machine stops working if we take its fluffy teddy bear away. I just don't think I want to live in that kind of world."
"Er," said Mad Drongo, "you could always, you know, sort of say it needs to work with the FTB enabled..." --Hogfather

And of course: "Stercus stercus stercus moriturus sum." --Interesting Times

so many qoutes, so little time....
two on the top of my head, not gonna take them off for anything! but if they jump down on thier own accord then thats their own business. can't be having anyone interfere with two qoutes thats- oh shiny! Where was I? oh yea

'There are some towns in the universe that think that they know how to have a good time. Places like New Orleanas and Rio reckon they not only know how to push the boat out but set fire to the harbor as well; but compared to Anhk-Morpork with its hair down they're a Welsh village at 2 p.m. on a wet sunday afternoon.' Guards! Guards!

'what goes around comes around; when not loked at too closely it passes for justice.' The Last Hero

my favorite aspect of his writing style is when he gives words themsleves habits and emotions; ex. likening words to fish in that some specialized words like 'rumpas' and 'fracas' can only survive in the reefs of newspapers and wouldn't survive out in the open sea. think that's from The truth....

There are too many!
But one that just leapt into my head...

"He wanted to make something of his life. He wanted to make a bed of it."

(from The Last Continent, maybe, or maybe not.)
