Re: Thud
Mon, December 19, 2005 - 7:21 PMHave you ever played the Game? I subscribe to Discworld Monthly (on email) and i read that the game was invented first (inspired by Discworld) and it's been such a success (in Britain) that Terry wrote this book! -

Re: Thud
Tue, December 20, 2005 - 4:25 PMSo thud (the game) is a takeoff of the Norwegian Viking Game called HNEFATAFL. -

Re: Thud
Thu, January 5, 2006 - 2:01 PMWhat do you think it most resembled, the Middle East conflict or the N. Ire. Troubles? To me, the Troubles, since he used the conflicting parades as an example...That, and both sides were laid low by srong drink...sounds like the Irish to me! -
-
Re: Thud
Thu, January 5, 2006 - 2:13 PMAnd he already DID the Middle East. To me it was obviously Ireland.

Re: Thud
Thu, January 5, 2006 - 2:52 PMTo me it sounded like the problems of the various Muslim immigrants in England (and France).
Not necessarily a problem of "place" but of trying to hold onto your cultural identity in the face of many other cultures.

Re: Thud
Wed, March 1, 2006 - 2:20 PMif you've never played Hneftafl, I must recommend you give it a shot sometime. When I was younger, my friends and I played it all the time. Plus, it gives you a bit of an upper hand at playing thud... ;)

I've tried to get in on Amazon.UK, and it looks like there's a shipping block. The options seem to be ebay or ebay.co.uk for a used set, an amazingly expensive set at www.thudgame.com//limited_edition_set, or a travel set from the cunning artificer at www.discworldemporium.com/catalog.php
If anyone's interested in cripple Mr Onion, an appropriate deck is available at www.fatpackcards.co.uk/

Re: Thud
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 3:35 PMThis quote about art?
`Nude women are only Art if there's an urn in it,' said Fred Colon. This sounded a bit weak even to him, so he added, `or a plinth. Both is best, o'course. It's a secret sign, see, that they put in to say that it's Art and okay to look at.'
And musn't forget the little fat pink kid holding a mirror or a fan or similar. Even if he's grinning!
Oh dear.... somebody should tell Jeff Koons. -
-
Re: Thud
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 3:41 PMYup, thats the one. Good thing I'm usually on a plinth when I'm working! -
-
Re: Thud
Sat, May 20, 2006 - 5:12 AMI imagine the urn would be a bit cumbersome, maybe go with the fan and leave the fat pink kid behind. -
-
Re: Thud
Sat, May 20, 2006 - 9:02 PMThe fat pink kid should be my Driver! he can carry the urn.
And to make it High Class Fine Art, there really oughta be a potted palm... -

Re: Thud
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 11:13 AMgot your peacock feathers right here!
I was in a French Postcard show last winter and we had Both! It was very, ahem, artistic! -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Thud
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 2:35 PMMust be, given there were peacock feathers. I have no idea what a French Postcard show is, but I have a feeling that's why I joined Tribe: a gateway to a whole new exotic world. -

Re: Thud
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 4:33 PMFind "Mrs Henderson Presents", although it may not be on DVD/tape yet as it is less than a year old. French postcards are technically Victorian porn, a FP show had fully nude performers in eras when nudity was dirty. The show I did was fully Victorian, the Mrs Henderson movie is WWII era, but the concept is the same- living Grecian Statuary , generally. Grecain goddesses are "classical" so its oK that they're nekkid! -
-
Re: Thud
Tue, May 23, 2006 - 2:02 AMAahhh, it's all clear to me now - I seem to recall reading something aboutMrs Henderson Presents - those Grecian Goddesses definitely knew about those plinths.

other appearances of plinth
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 8:13 AMIn "The Truth", remember one of the "New Firm" is an art appreciator.
"We -ing love policemen. If there was a policeman's ball we'd buy a ticket. Especially if it was mounted on a plinth..." -
-
Re: other appearances of plinth
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 10:14 AMThe unforgettable Mr. Tulip! I still say they'd be faced with a conundrum if they mounted Noddy on a plinth...

Re: Thud
Wed, April 26, 2006 - 4:08 PMBest Part About Thud:
"Where is my cow?
Is that my cow?
It goes HURRGH!
It is a hippopotomas!
That is not my cow!"
That whole story ESPECIALLY nearer the end, but I won't spoil it.
It's the best part of everything. -
-
Re: Thud
Thu, January 25, 2007 - 4:50 PMI have my kids trained. Now when I exclaim "Where's my cow?" even my just-turned-two year old answers "Mooo!". I enjoyed the whole book, but I won't be forgetting "Where's My Cow" anytime soon. :-)
